About us
If we're being honest and transparent (as we always are here), Lily & Marigold came to me quite out of the blue, and very much out of frustration with the beauty industry.
Let's rewind...
In my late 20s I developed a love of skincare. So many of my hard earned dollars went to experimenting with various products from popular name brands. And I was happy to shell out the cash. I rarely worried about reading labels or seeking "clean" beauty. I certainly didn't question what clean beauty meant, which products classified, and how clean they truly were.
Fast forward to my early 30s, and my perspective dramatically shifted. I was trying to conceive and struggling. I became concerned about what I ate and what I allowed access to my body. I discovered many of my hallowed, favourite products weren’t up to my standards. They included harsh preservatives, hormone-disruptive fragrances and, of course, actives that weren't considered safe in pregnancy. And I noticed that many still classified as “clean”.
Eventually I became pregnant... twice, and followed those journeys with breastfeeding. I spent the next several years fine-tuning my skincare regimen to include products that were safe for use in these stages of life, but I was met with new challenges. Some products were safe, but not entirely effective, leaning hard on botanical ingredients I was growing to love, but completely ignoring proven actives. Some products hailed themselves "all natural" and "preservative-free", but grew mould while sitting on my bathroom countertop. Why wasn't there a happy medium between potentially harmful and ultra-crunchy?
At that point I remembered my day job as a pharmacist. I realized I knew exactly what I wanted for my skin and, better still, I knew how to create and test a formula. I knew how to research clinical effectiveness. I understood stability testing. If I knew what I wanted and how to achieve it, I should be making these products myself.
And so I did. And the rest is history. Lily & Marigold (named for my two, precious girls' birth flowers) was the natural progression of me creating exactly what I was struggling to find. The happy medium. The storied use of botanicals mixed with well-studied active ingredients. All safe and gentle, but effective.
Did I mention we're also 100% vegan and cruelty-free?
